A cookie module, also known as an HTTP cookie, web cookie or cookie browser, is usually a small dimension file, consisting of letters and numbers, sent by a website and stored in the user's web browser when the user is browsing a website. The cookie modules have been designed as a secure way for websites to retain the status of the website or the activity of the past user. When the user navigates to the same site again, the information stored by the cookie module can be used by the website to announce the website of the user's previous activity. Cookie modules may include pressing certain buttons, logging in or retaining web pages visited by the user months or years ago.
Some cookie modules are essential for the operation of some services; others are useful for collecting information on the use of the website. Some cookie modules are temporary, for example during certain campaigns, and will disappear when you close your web browser, but others remain on your computer for a longer period of time.
Some cookie modules are required exclusively for the functioning of the websites, while others are used to improve the activity and the user experience.
The different types of cookie modules used on websites can be: strictly necessary (remember what the user added in the shopping cart; remember at what stage the user is in the order), functional (retain the user login details; secure connection when it is connected; it ensures the unitary aspect of the website, it offers instant messaging assistance), performance cookies (improve the performance of the website; improve the user experience), signaling cookies, also called targeting cookies (allow the distribution and appreciation of content; transmit the information to other websites to personalize the ads).
